From the Tees to the Tweed, from Barnard Castle to Berwick and from Hartlepool to Haltwhistle, the North East of England holds a long history and unique heritage. Many have fought and spilled blood on our soil – Roman legions, Dark-Age war lords, Viking raiders, Norman invaders, reivers and rebels; three centuries of cross-border conflict with Scotland changed the course of not just regional but national history.

Historical figures such as Ida the Flamebearer, Aethelfrith the Destroyer, William Wallace and Harry Hotspur all feature, but the sound and fury of arms and armour has largely drowned out the voices of ordinary people and individuals whose names have been lost to history. To this end, Northumbria’s Bloody History also includes accounts of random acts of everyday violence, the ravages of the Black Death and the cruelties of religious persecution in the land which once formed the heart of ancient Northumbria.

Martin Dufferwiel, a resident of Durham is the author of a number of magazine articles and four published books about the city and county. He enjoys writing history for non-historians, offering an alternative to most contemporary volumes about historical topics. He is a member of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and of the Society of Authors.

A new study of a critical period in the history of the British Army.

The last half century has seen society, technology, the character of conflict and the British Army itself all change greatly. From a low point in the 1970s, the Army’s war fighting capability increased in the 1980s in the face of a prospective war with the Soviet Union. This capability was then tested on operations from Kuwait in 1991 through to Afghanistan in 2001 and the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

There followed two decades of descent from this high plateau of military achievement. Mistakes made in Iraq and Afghanistan led to a decline in support for military deployments. Cuts to defence funding and botched equipment procurements also meant the British Army of 2021 was only half the size of that of 1970, and with much key fighting equipment either obsolete or approaching obsolescence.

Ben Barry served in the Army from 1975 to 2010, often in key staff appointments, and has worked closely with the Army in the following decade. This new study draws not only on his personal experience, but also on a very wide range of written sources complemented by interviews to provide a new interpretation of this period that challenges the existing narratives.

Ben Barry was commissioned into the Light Infantry and later commanded its second battalion. He is now Senior Fellow for Land Warfare in the International Institute for Strategic Studies and a visiting professor at the Department of War Studies, Kings College London. He is the author of Blood, Metal and Dust: How Victory Turned into Defeat in Afghanistan and Iraq (Osprey), which was shortlisted for The Duke of Wellington Medal for Military History 2021, the British Army Book of the Year 2021, a finalist for the 2020 Army Historical Foundation Distinguished Writing Award and awarded First Runner Up in the Templer Medal Book Prize 2021.

Hoe gaat goed of slecht het nu met het Verenigd Koninkrijk? op die vraag probeert journalist Niels Posthumus die sinds 2021 correspondent voor Trouw is in het Verenigd Koninkrijk antwoord te geven is zijn nieuwe boek. Hij maakt hiervoor reizen door het Koninkrijk, naar Engeland, Schotland, Wales en niet te vergeten Noord-Ierland.

Als rode draad voor zijn boek heeft hij gekozen de verhouding van de nieuwe koning Charles III tot zijn volk en vice versa. En deze insteek werkt uitstekend. Dat het economisch en sociaal niet goed gaat met het grootste deel van het Verenigd Koninkrijk zal de meesten van ons niet verbazen. Maar wat Niels Posthumus uitstekend doet is invulling geven in wat er aan de hand is, hoe scheef en misschien zelfs verziekt verhouding zijn tussen Londen machtscentrum en economisch hart en de rest van het koninkrijk.

Vele tientallen gesprekken met Britten uit de verschillende gebiedsdelen en uit allerlei lagen van de bevolking heeft Niels Posthumus gevoerd. Alleen de weerslag van deze gesprekken maken het boek al goed en boeien. Maar hij doet nog wat extra’s hij koppelt deze gevoelens en waarnemingen aan de verhouding die de huidige koning Charles III, voorheen Prins van Wales heeft en had met het land en de bevolking. En juist deze toevoeging maakt het boek extra lezenswaardig. Wie meer inzicht wil krijgen in wat de Britten beweegt en wat voor rol de koning hierbij speelt, moet dit boek zeker lezen. Amanda Harvey Purse is an author and historical researcher for London-based museums. She has spent the last twenty-five years studying the Victorian period and is a member of The Royal Historical Society. She has studied the Tudors at the University of Roehampton and is the founder of Tudor Secrets and Myths.
