Shirley Jackson was born on 14 December 1916 in San Francisco, California. When her short story, The Lottery, was first published in Hangsaman Shirley Jackson 1951 novel first editionthe New Yorker in 1948, readers were so horrified they sent her hate mail; it has since become one of the most iconic American stories of all time. Her first novel, The Road Through the Wall, was published in the same year and was followed by Hangsaman, The Bird’s Nest, The Sundial, The Haunting of Hill House (De geesten van Hill House) and We Have Always Lived in the Castle (We hebben altijd in een kasteel gewoond), widely seen as her masterpiece. In addition to her dark, brilliant novels, she wrote lightly fictionalized magazine pieces about family life with her four children and her husband, the critic Stanley Edgar Hyman. Shirley Jackson died on 8 August 1965 in North Bennington, Vermont, at the age of 48, due to a heart condition.

She is the author of more than a dozen books of poetry, including Does Your House Have Lions?, which was nominated for the National Book Critics Circle Award, and Homegirls & Handgrenades, which won an American Book Award. She has also received many other awards including the Robert Creeley Award, the Frost Medal, the Wallace Stevens Award, and the Anisfield-Wolf Lifetime Achievement Award. She lives in Philadelphia.

He then became known for his remarkable sequence of crime novels, generally set in Michigan or Florida. A master of funny and threatening dialogue, his influence has been incalculable. Leonard received the Lifetime Achievement Award from PEN US and the Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America. Leonard died on 20 August 2013 in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, aged 87.

Henry Miller was born 29 December 1891 in New York City. He is one of the most important American writers of the 20th century. His best-known novels include Tropic of Cancer (1934), Tropic of Capricorn (1939), and the Rosy Crucifixion trilogy (Sexus, 1949, Plexus, 1953, and Nexus, 1959), all published in France and banned in the US and the UK until 1964. He is widely recognised as an irreverent, risk-taking writer who redefined the novel and made the link between the European avant-garde and the American Beat generation. At the age of 88 he died on 7 June 1980 in Los Angeles, California.

Abandoning the Cotswolds village that raised him, the young Laurie Lee walks to London. There he makes a living labouring and playing the violin. But, deciding to travel further a field and knowing only the Spanish phrase for ‘Will you please give me a glass of water?’, he heads for Spain. With just a blanket to sleep under and his trusty violin, he spends a year crossing Spain, from Vigo in the north to the southern coast. Only the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War puts an end to his extraordinary peregrinations.

Laurie Lee was born on 24 Juni 1914 in Stroud, Gloucestershire in Engeland. Hehas written some of the best-loved travel books in the English language. Born in Stroud, Gloucestershire, in 1914, he was educated at Slad village school and Stroud Central School. At the age of nineteen he walked to London and then travelled on foot through Spain, where he was trapped by the outbreak of the Civil War. He later returned by crossing the Pyrenees, as he recounted in A Moment of War. He died on 13 May 1997 is Slad, Gloucestershire, aged 82. He published four collections of poems: The Sun My Monument (1944), The Bloom of Candles (1947), My Many-Coated Man (1955) and Pocket Poets (1960). His other works include The Voyage of Magellan (1948), The Firstborn (1964), I Can’t Stay Long (1975), and Two Women (1983). He also wrote three bestselling volumes of autobiography: Cider with Rosie (1959), which has sold over six million copies worldwide, As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning (1969) and A Moment of War (1991).

She fell in love and lived with an older woman before settling down with Una Troubridge, a married sculptor. She died in 7 October 1943 in London, 63 years of age due to cancer of the rectum and is buried in Highgate Cemetery in London.

Oh Jung-hee is born 9 November 1947 in Seoul, South Korea. She is often considered the grande dame of South Korean literature. Her work has received both the Yi Sang Literary Award and the Dong-in Literary Award, South Korea’s most prestigious prizes for short fiction, and has been translated into multiple languages in Southeast Asia, Latin America, the United States, and Europe.
