Anton Valens was niet alleen schrijver, maar ook een begenadigd beeldend kunstenaar. Een kniebuiging voor de ezel is een levendig en ongewoon boek: een kunstboek en literaire tekst ineen, een boek dat kunst consumenten aanmoedigt om beter te kijken en jonge kunstenaars om bevlogen te blijven werken. Voor de vele fans van de schrijver die genoten van zijn droog komische verhalen en romans is dit zowel een feest van herkenning als een inspirerende ontdekking van het dubbeltalent Valens.

Anton Valens (17 januari 1964, Paterswolde, Drenthe – 7 november 2021, Amsterdam) volgde de opleiding schilderen aan de Rietveld Academie en aan de Rijksacademie. In de jaren daarna gaf hij les aan de Rietveld Academie en exposeerde van tijd tot tijd op wisselende locaties. Daarnaast werkte hij tien jaar in de thuiszorg, als thuishulp-A.

In 2004 verscheen zijn debuutroman ‘Meester in de hygiëne’, het geestige en liefdevolle verhaal over thuishulp Bonne en zijn oude cliënten – ‘een van de beste debuten van het seizoen’ volgens ‘Trouw’. De roman werd bekroond met de Geertjan Lubberhuizenprijs voor Literaire Prozadebuten 2005 en de Lucy B. & C.W. van der Hoogtprijs 2006. In 2008 verschenen de verhalenbundel ‘Dweiloorlog’ en ‘Ik wilde naar de rand van Bejing. Een reisverhaal.’

‘Vis’, een novelle over een steuntrekkende kunstenaar die een week mee vaart op een boomkotter naar de Duitse Bocht, verscheen in 2009. Literair criticus van ‘NRC Handelsblad’ Arjen Fortuin rekende het tot een van de 13 onvergetelijke boeken uit zijn vijftienjarige praktijk als recensent. Vertalingen van ‘Meester in de hygiëne’ en ‘Vis’ verschenen in Duitsland en Frankrijk. In 2012 volgde de grote roman ‘Het boek ONT’, die de longlist van de Libris Literatuur Prijs haalde en genomineerd werd voor de AKO Literatuurprijs 2013, het Beste Groninger Boek 2012 en de Halewijn Literatuurprijs 2012.

In 2016 verscheen de roman ‘Het compostcirculatieplan’, die op de longlist van de Libris Literatuur Prijs kwam en werd bekroond met de F. Bordewijk-prijs 2016. ‘Chalet 152′, verscheen in oktober 2019 en zijn laatste boek ‘Een wagon vol duivels’ verscheen in november 2022.

In 2016 werd bij Anton Valens kanker geconstateerd. Hij overleed op 7 november 2021.

On Boxing Day 2022, in Rome, Hanif Kureishi had a fall. When he came to, in a pool of blood, he was horrified to realise he had lost the use of his limbs. He could no longer walk, write or wash himself. He could do nothing without the help of others, and required constant care in a hospital. So began an odyssey of a year through the medical systems of Rome and Italy, with the hope of somehow being able to return home, to his house in London.

While confined to a series of hospital wards, he felt compelled to write, but being unable to type or to hold a pen, he began to dictate to family members the words which formed in his head. The result was an extraordinary series of dispatches from his hospital bed – a diary of a life in pieces, recorded with rare honesty, clarity and courage.

As Hanif wrote, early on: ‘A few days ago, a bomb went off in my life, but this bomb has also shattered the lives of those around me. My partner, my children, my friends.’

This book takes these hospital dispatches – edited, expanded and meticulously interwoven with new writing – and charts both a shattering and a reassembling: a new life born of pain and loss, but animated by new feelings – of gratitude, humility and love.

Hanif Kureishi (5 December 1954, Bromley, London) ,is a novelist, screenwriter, and playwright. He is the author of nine novels, including The Buddha of Suburbia (winner of the Whitbread Prize for Best First Novel), The Black Album, Intimacy, and The Nothing. His screenplay of My Beautiful Laundrette was nominated for an Oscar, and he is the recipient of the PEN/Pinter Prize, the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, and was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. He lives in London.

From the moment he interviewed Yoko Ono on his late night radio show in September 1971, Elliot Mintz’s life would never the same again. That phone call would lead him to an intense and revealing friendship with Yoko and her husband, John Lennon, until John’s untimely death in 1980, and beyond, to the present day.

In 1971, then the talk host on American airwaves, Elliot Mintz was talking to all of the major figures in the burgeoning West Coast music scene when he was asked whether he would interview Yoko about her new album. Their talk quickly lead to other private calls and then to John Lennon, with whom he quickly formed a firm bond. Those conversations became hours-long epics, to the extent that Elliot had another phone line put in, for which only two people had the number – John and Yoko.

The aftermath of The Beatles’ breakup ushered in a tumultuous decade. Elliot witnessed it, or heard all about it, at close hand including the unbearable cost of such fame when John and Yoko separated for what became known as his ‘lost weekend’. There was joy when their son Sean was born and the creative rebirth that was the multi-platinum selling triumph, Double Fantasy. But then there was unimaginable tragedy too when John was brutally murdered in December 1980.

Elliot Mintz (16 February 1945, The Bronx, New York) is a professional media consultant who has worked with the likes of John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Bob Dylan, Paris Hilton, Diana Ross, and many more. Prior to being a consultant, Mintz worked as a radio DJ and television host and served as the entertainment correspondent for Eyewitness News on KABC.

Jennifer Neal was born in the United States to a family that moved continuously for their own survival and well-being—from the Great Migration to the twenty-first century. As an adult, she has continued to travel the world as a Black queer woman, across two decades and four countries—from Japan to the US and then Australia to Germany, where she has settled for now.

Throughout her moves, Neal threads her personal story of immigration with local Black histories and racial politics to provide context for her own experiences. The result is both a crucial examination of how racism plays a foundational role in modern-day immigration systems and a tender tribute to immigrants and their stories.

Jennifer Neal is an American Australian author, artist, and occasional standup comedian. Her work has been published in NPR, Playboy, Gay Magazine, The Root, The Erotic Review, The Cut, and many other publications. She is a MacDowell Fellow and Pushcart Prize-nominated essayist. My Pisces Heart is her second book.

Nico de Haan, zoon van een predikant, kwam in de vroege jaren 50 in het pittoreske Zalk wonen. In dit boek blikt hij terug op deze vormende periode van zijn leven en op zijn ontluikende liefde voor vogels en de natuur. Neem een duik in zijn herinneringen, terwijl hij je meeneemt naar het vogelnest hoog in de kerktoren of de uren die hij doorbracht in zijn zelfgemaakte vogelkijkhut. Dit boek werpt een nostalgische blik op zowel de natuurlijke pracht als het dorpsleven, beide onmiskenbaar veranderd in de afgelopen zeventig jaar.

Nico de Haan (22 juli 1947, Aarlanderveen), misschien wel de beroemdste vogelaar van Nederland, heeft zijn hele leven gewijd aan vogelbehoud. In 1974 kreeg hij een aanstelling bij Vogelbescherming Nederland en tien jaar later werd hij plaatsvervangend directeur. In 2004 richtte hij zijn eigen bedrijf op, VogelkijkCentrum Nederland. Hij maakte populaire tv-programma’s zoals Baardmannetjes en schreef bestsellers, waaronder De gewiekste vogelgids. De Haan is inmiddels bijna twintig jaar ambassadeur voor Vogelbescherming en viert binnenkort zijn vijftigjarig jubileum als vogelbeschermer.
