After finishing school she attended a course in creative writing course at Flinders University and earned a PhD.  She is the co-founder and publishing director of Australian literary journal Kill Your Darlings. In 2011 she won the inaugural Writing Australia Unpublished Manuscript Award. Christina Erikson is, samen met haar man Thomas Erikson, eigenaar van het landgoed Svarta. Vanaf 2012 begon ze aan haar carrière als schrijfster en ze schrijft romans geïnspireerd op de geschiedenis van Svarta.

Als jij van mij was is een roman over Svarta, geïnspireerd op de ontdekking van Christina Erikson, dat het landgoed heel lang door vrouwen werd beheerd èn dat een aantal van hen ook de naam Christina droeg.

Het verhaal speelt zich af in 1782 op het landgoed Svarta en aan het hof in Stockholm. De hoofdpersoon is de dan 16-jarige Chrisina Sporre, dochter van baron Karl Sporre en de van geboorte adellijke barones Eleonora. Ze is de oudste van drie kinderen: haar zusje Beata is een schoonheid en de oogappel van haar moeder. Broer Marcus zal – als enige mannelijke erfgenaam – in de toekomst de landgoed-eigenaar worden.

Christina’s ouders vinden dat het voor haar tijd is om haar verantwoordelijkheid te nemen en in het huwelijk te treden met een geschikte partij. Daarvoor worden passende heren uitgenodigd op het landgoed en reist Christina met haar ouders naar Stockholm voor het seizoen van bals. Maar Christina heeft zelf heel andere ideëen voor haar toekomst. Ze is al van kind af aan innig bevriend met de metselaarszoon Gustaf, al heeft ze deze vriendschap nu ze de huwbare leeftijd nadert moeten verbreken. Verder is ze dol op het landgoed – dat heeft ze met haar vader gemeen – en is ze een enorme paardenliefhebster. Haar droom is op het landgoed een eigen stoeterij te beginnen. En ze is er 100% zeker van dat haar kamenier, haar allerbeste vriendin Maja, wat er ook gebeurt bij haar zal blijven.

Terwijl Christina gegadigden ontmoet en leert hoe een huwelijk in zijn werk kan gaan, speelt zich op het landgoed een drama af, wat veel mensen raakt.

Kan Christina haar eigen dromen vasthouden en haar geliefde Svarta?

In een vlotte schrijfstijl vertelt Christina Erikson het verhaal; een verhaal dat zowel spannend als romantisch is. Het mooie landgoed en de geschiedenis aan het Zweedse hof, met mooie, maar zeer oncomfortabele kleding en allerlei kleinerende regels voor dames bijvoorbeeld, zijn een mooie achtergrond voor het verhaal. Ik vond het een prettig boek om te lezen, al miste ik hier en daar wel wat diepgang en vond ik de verhaallijn een beetje voorspelbaar. Toch al met al een heerlijk boek om lekker mee te ontspannen. De roman is gewaardeerd met ∗∗∗∗∗ (zeer goed).

Hilary Mantel was born 6 July 1952 in Glossop, Derbyshire, Engeland. She is the author of the bestselling novel Wolf Hall and its Hilary Mantel Wolf Hall historical novel about Thomas Cromwell Booker Prize 2012sequel, Bring Up the Bodies, which both won the Booker Prize. The final novel of the Wolf Hall trilogy, The Mirror & the Light, debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list and won world-wide critical acclaim. Mantel wrote seventeen celebrated books, including the memoir Giving Up the Ghost, and she was awarded the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction, the Walter Scott Prize, the Costa Book Award, the Hawthornden Prize, and many other accolades. In 2014, Mantel was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. She died at age seventy 22 September 2022 in Exeter, Devon, England.
