Flaptekst van het boek over Labour onder Keith Starmer

The explosive, definitive, behind-the-scenes account of Labour and its general election in 2024, from the authors of Left Out.

Drawing on their unrivalled access throughout the Labour party, the Times and Sunday Times investigative duo behind Left Out now present the explosive inside story of Labour’s transformation and general election under Starmer.

This is the definitive telling of a momentous time for the party: either their election as the first Labour government since the Blair/Brown era, or a catastrophic mishandling of a huge lead in the opinion polls. Either way, the story centres on Starmer’s relentless and single-minded pursuit of power, and on the inevitable turmoil and carnage as he expunges opponents and attempts to unite his party in the face of searingly divisive events.

Richly peopled with all of the major figures of Labour present and past, as well as with those pulling strings behind the scenes, this will ultimately be a must-read, warts-and-all picture of the new British government – or it will be the dramatic story of one of the most spectacular car-crashes in Labour’s history and in contemporary British politics.

Tony Blair On Leadership recensie, review en informatie

  • “The book is engaging, insightful, provocative and derisive of “place-holder” leaders who lack the grit to be “a change-maker.” (Andrew Rawnsley, The Observer)
  • “A fascinating treatise on leadership . . . The best bits of the book – and they are genuinely very good – are the passages offering advice on how to cope with the personal burdens of leadership, from dealing with the pressures of social media, to developing a hinterland, avoiding hubris, and knowing when to leave the stage . . . There is much to learn from On Leadership, and I am glad Blair has written it. It will fascinate anyone interested in the art of governing, even in the abstract – and represents a good investment of time for anyone in or aspiring to political leadership.” (Nicola Sturgeon, Guardian)

Flaptekst van het nieuwe boek van voormalig Labour politicus Tonu Blair

Tony Blair learnt the precepts of governing the hard way: by leading a country for over ten years. In that time he came to understand that there are certain key characteristics of successful government that he wished he had known about when he started.

Now he has written the manual on political leadership that he would have wanted when he first took office in 1997, sharing the insights he has gained from his personal experience and from observing other world leaders at first hand, both while he was prime minister and since, through his Institute’s work with political leaders and governments globally.

Written in short, pithy chapters, packed with examples drawn from all forms of political systems from around the world, the book answers the key questions: How should a leader organise the centre of government and their office? How should they prioritise and develop the right plan and hire the right personnel, cope with unforeseen events and crises, and balance short-term wins with longterm structural change? What’s the best way to deal with an obstructive or inert bureaucracy, to attract investment, to reform healthcare or education, and to ensure security for the citizen? And how should governments harness the massive opportunities of the 21st-century technological revolution?

This is a masterclass on leadership in general, and political leadership in particular, from a master statesman.

Tony Blair (6 May 1953, Edinburgh, Scotland)was prime minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland between 1997 and 2007. The only Labour leader in the party’s 100-year history to win three consecutive elections, he led a government whose achievements ranged from wholesale domestic reform, to a major programme of overseas aid and development, to the securing of the historic Good Friday Agreement in Northern Ireland. After leaving office he founded the not-for-profit Tony Blair Institute (TBI) in the conviction that a country’s success and ability to enact transformational change is dependent on the effectiveness of its leadership and governance. Under his direction the Institute works with political leaders around the world, advising on strategy, policy and delivery – and on the use of technology to drive all three.
