New Orleans, 1853. A young Zapotec exile from Mexico named Benito Juárez disembarks at a fetid port city at the edge of a swamp. Accompanied by a small group of fellow exiles who plot their return and hoped-for victory over the Mexican dictatorship, Juárez immerses himself in the city, which absorbs him like a sponge. He and his compatriots work odd jobs, fall victim to the cons and confusions of a strange young nation, succumb to the hallucinations of yellow fever, and fall in love with the music and food all around them. But unavoidable, too, is the stark trade in human beings.

With the extraordinary linguistic play and love of popular forms that have characterized all of Herrera’s fiction, Season of the Swamp is a magnificent work of speculative history, a love letter to the city of New Orleans and its polyglot culture, and a cautionary statement that informs our understanding of the world we live in.

Born in Actopan, Mexico, in 1970, Yuri Herrera studied Politics in Mexico, Creative Writing in El Paso and took his PhD in literature at Berkeley. His first novel to appear in English, Signs Preceding the End of the World, was published to great critical acclaim in 2015 and included in many Best-of-Year lists, including The Guardian‘s Best Fiction and NBC News’s Ten Great Latino Books, going on to win the 2016 Best Translated Book Award. He is currently teaching at the Tulane University, in New Orleans.

It gathers a variety of Levrero’s earliest and most formally inventive publications, ranging from dazzling single paragraph micro-fictions à la Donald Barthelme to adventurous Lewis Carroll-esque tales of forty pages’ length.

From the shocking surreal twists of ‘Beggar Street’ to the Escher-like grammatical maze of ‘The Boarding House’, via the pseudo-fairy tale classic ‘The Basement’, this book explores uncanny domestic spaces, using the structures of the stories themselves as tools for re-inventing narrative possibility.

Mario Levrero was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, on 23 january 1940 and died there on 30 august 2004. Levrero was a photographer, bookseller, comics scriptwriter, humorist, crossword author, and creator of brain games. He wrote twelve novels and several short story collections and it was not long before he gained cult status amongst readers in Uruguay and Argentina, despite keeping a low profile. He has inspired Latin American writers such as Rodolfo Fogwill, César Aira and Alejandro Zambra. In 2000 he was awarded the Guggenheim grant that allowed him to complete work on The Luminous Novel, which was published posthumously.

A lone white man lives beside the river on the edge of the Penobscot reservation in Maine. Morgan Talty is a citizen of the Penobscot Indian Nation, and bon in born in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He is the author of the critically acclaimed linked story collection Night of the Living Rez (USA: Tin House Books 2022; UK: And Other Stories 2025), winner of the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize and the National Book Critics Circle John Leonard Prize for Best First Book. His writing has appeared in Granta and The Guardian amongst others, and he was selected by Karen Russell as a National Book Foundation 5 Under 35 Honoree. Talty is an Assistant Professor of English in Creative Writing and Native American and Contemporary Literature at the University of Maine, Orono, and he is on the faculty at the Stonecoast MFA in creative writing as well as the Institute of American Indian Arts. He lives in Levant, Maine.

Inland is a work which gathers in emotional power as it moves across the grasslands of its narrator’s imagination – from Szolnok County on the great plains of Hungary where a man writes in the library of his manor house, to the Institute of Prairie Studies in Tripp County, South Dakota, where the editor of the journal Hinterland receives his writing, to the narrator’s own native district in Melbourne County, between Moonee Ponds and the Merri, where he recalls the constant displacements of his childhood. ‘No thing in the world is one thing,’ he declares; ‘some places are many more than one place.’

These overlapping worlds are bound by recurring motifs – fish pond, fig-tree, child-woman, the colours white, red and green – and by deep feelings of intimacy and betrayal, which are brought to full expression as the book moves to its close.

Michele Mari is geboren op 26 december 1955 in Milaan. Hij is filoloog en kenner van science fiction en stripboeken. In 1989 1989 debuteerde hij met de roman Di bestia in bestia. Inmiddels heeft hij zo’n vijftien romans en verhalenbundels geschreven. Tot nu toe is zijn werk niet in het Nederlands vertaald. Tanya Tagaq Split Tooth

Tanya Tagaq is op 5 mei 1975 geboren in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, in het noorden van Canada. Na op  Sir John Franklin High School in Yellowknife de middelbare school te hebben doorlopen ging ze visual arts studeren aan de Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax. Hier ontwikkelde ze haar eigen vorm van Inuit keelzang die normaal gesproken door twee vrouwen wordt uitgevoerd. Ze trad steeds vaker op tijdens Canadese folkfestivals en kreeg wereldwijde aandacht. Ze heeft ook opgetreden in Nederland.

Ze heeft inmiddels een aantal albums uitgebracht en is daarnaast ook aan de slag gegaan als schrijfster. Haar debuutroman Split Tooth verscheen oorspronkelijk in 2018 en werd goed ontvangen.
