James Salter was born 10 June 1925 in Passaic, New Jersey in the United States. He is the author of numerous books, including the novels: Solo Faces, Light Years, A Sport and a Pastime, The Arm of Flesh (revised as Cassada), and The Hunters; the memoirs Gods of Tin and Burning the Days; the collections Dusk and Other Stories, which won the 1989 PEN/Faulkner Award, and Last Night, which won the Rea Award for the Short Story and the PEN/Malamud Award; and Life Is Meals: A Food Lover’s Book of Days, written with Kay Salter. He died on 19 Juni 2015 in Sag Harbor, New York at the age of 90.

Jewelle Gomez is born on 11 September 1948 in Boston, Massachusetts. She is a writer, activist and the author of the double Lambda Award-winning novel, The Gilda Stories. Her other publications include The Lipstick Papers, Flamingoes and Bears and Oral Tradition. Formerly the executive director of the Poetry Center and the American Poetry Archives at San Francisco State University, she has also worked in philanthropy for many years. She is the former director of the literature programme at the New York State Council on the Arts, the director of Grants and Community Initiatives for Horizon and the President of the San Francisco Library Commission. She lives in San Francisco.

Elizabeth Strout is geboren op 6 januari 1956 in Portland, Maine, in de Verenigde Staten. Ze schreef onder andere de romans Olive Kitteridge, dat bekroond werd met de Pulitzerprijs, Ik heet Lucy Barton  en Niets is onmogelijk. werd met de Pulitzerprijs bekroond en door HBO tot een miniserie gemaakt. In 2021 verscheen Het verhaal van William, die op de shortlist stond van de Booker Prize. In 2022 volgde Lucy aan zee. James Weldon Johnson’s The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man is a powerful, trailblazing novel that exposes the intricate relationship between race and class in late nineteenth-century America.

After losing his mother at a very young age, the narrator is thrust from his comfortable, middle-class environment, afforded by his distant but aristocratic father, into the wider world. His passion for music begins in Georgia’s all-black church community and takes him from New York, where he plays ragtime for a rich white gentleman, to the South, where he witnesses lynchings and out of fear gives up his passion, as well as his race, to pass for white.

Relevant to this day, The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man is an unflinching account of black experience in America.

James Weldon Johnson was born in Jacksonville, Florida,  on 17 June 1871. He trained in music and in 1901 moved to New York with his brother John; together they wrote around two hundred songs The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man James Weldon Johnson novel from 1912 first editionfor Broadway. His first book, The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man, published anonymously in 1912, was not a great success until he reissued it in his own name in 1927. In that time he established his reputation as a writer and became known in the Harlem Renaissance for his poems and for collating anthologies of poems by other black writers. Through his work as a civil rights activist he became the first executive secretary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), as well as the first African American professor to be hired at New York University. He died on 26 June 1938 in Wiscasset, Maine, at the age of 67.

In The Making of Americans, Gertrude Stein sets out to tell “a history of a family’s progress,” radically reworking the traditional family saga novel to encompass her vision of personality and psychological relationships. As the history progresses over three generations, Stein also meditates on her own writing, on the making of The Making of Americans, and on America.

Gertrude Stein was born on 3 February 1874 in Allegheny, near Pittsburgh  in Pennsylvania,  in to a prosperous German-Jewish The Making of Americans Gertrude Stein novel from 1925 first editionfamily. She was educated in France and the United States, worked under the pioneering psychologist William James, and later studied medicine. With her brother Leo she was an important patron of the arts, acquiring works by many contemporary artists, most famously Picasso, while her home became a popular meeting place for writers and painters from Matisse to Hemingway. Her books include Three Lives, Tender Buttons, and The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas. She died on 27 July 1946 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France at the age of 72 and was burried on the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.
