5,0 van 5 sterren Three Great Essays
This is a collection of three essays by George Orwell written in 1945 and published originally in the magazines: Polemic, Contemporary Jewish Record, and Tribune. All of them are additionally collected, along with a host of others, in Orwell’s Collected Essays. The three essays, “Notes on Nationalism”, “Antisemitism in Britain” and “The Sporting Spirit”, have a similar theme. Each is an analysis of the phenomenon called nationalism.
Orwell divides nationalism and separates it from patriotism, but he also discusses an aspect of nationalism which I find fascinating and relevant to American society today. That of negative-nationalism, where a person can have a purely negative attitude towards a society (usually the one they live in) with no positive feelings towards any other culture or country. While slightly different, this attitude is just as destructive as pro-nationalist attitude as a person’s main motivation. The negative-nationalist just wants to destroy anything to do with a society, to erase and condemn it completely. Often this is the prime motivation of various Communist\Socialist parties worming their way into positions of power.
In the second essay, “Antisemitism in Britain”, Orwell discusses how anti-Jewish sentiment has not dissipated in Britain, but due to the Nazi atrocities it isn’t discussed anymore. Many people secretly still dislike the Jews, but would never openly admit it, making “stamping it out” (Orwell’s words) completely impossible if it hidden.
The last article is rather lighthearted and demonstrates the tribal nature that people take to one’s sports team, and how often that team is much more important to people than the politicians about them. He points out people often treat their chosen political party with the same rah-rah-rah mentality that they do their football team. It’s not they're winning. It's we’re winning.

5,0 van 5 sterren I can see the snakes through the grass a little easier now.
A good little essay that made me think depper about nationalism. The concept of nationalism is described in this essay outside the concept of a nation state and more as being loyal to a philosophy/nation/religion etc to the point you ignore its failings and stop using reason to analyse it in comparison to other ideas. It also includes a short essay called 'Antisemitism in Britain' and another titled 'the sporting spirit'.
Orwell breaks the concept of nationalism down into three main categories (Positive/Negative & Transferred nationalism) and how different types of political ideologies can be nationalistic without representing a nation state (I.e communists who ignore how many millions died in communist regimes when saying they prefer it to capitalism). Ends with a nice warning that we can fall into the trap of nationalism and to stop yourself from being blind to failings in what you believe in and be willing to criticise it.

5,0 van 5 sterren A great place to start George Orwell's writing 💯
Book Review : Notes on Nationalism by George Orwell
My rating : 4.5 🌟/5🌟
My opinion: George Orwell for me is a legendary writer whose words I find to be very straight and he's very vocal towards what he believes to be right and true 🌟🙌 and in this book he explained to me the real nationalism , and how people always confuse it with patriotism and what are the misconceptions about it 😲 for example his take on NATIONALISM vs PATRIOTISM( i.e “The difference between patriotism and nationalism is that the patriot is proud of his country for what it does , and the nationalist is proud of his country no matter what it does ; the first attitude creates a feeling of responsibility while the second a feeling of blind arrogance that leads to a war .”) is very thought provoking for me and there are various elements like this which needed to be read by people who enjoy this genre of nonfiction and a bit of real politics 🙌🌟 My recommendation : This book is true to the topic comprised of witty writing style of Orwell 👍🐥
