The happily ever after is only part of the story… A funny, touching, hopeful gem about love, marriage and second chances
It’s the day before her daughter’s wedding and things are not going well for Gail Baines. First thing, she loses her job – or quits, depending who you ask. Then her ex-husband Max turns up at her door expecting to stay for the festivities. He doesn’t even have a suit. Instead, he’s brought memories, a shared sense of humour – and a cat looking for a new home.
Just as Gail is wondering what’s next, their daughter Debbie discovers her groom has been keeping a secret…
As the big day dawns, the exes just can’t agree on what’s best for Debbie. Gail is seriously worried, while Max seems more concerned with whether to opt for the salmon or prime rib at the reception, if they make it that far.
The day after the wedding, Gail and Max prepare to go their separate ways again. But all the questions about the future of the happy couple have stirred up the past for Gail. Because ‘happy’ takes many forms, and sometimes the younger generation has much to teach the older about secrets, acceptance and taking the rough with the smooth.

5,0 van 5 sterren family conflicts
A new Anne Tyler novel destined to be an instant classic: a socially awkward mother of the bride navigates the days before and after her daughter’s wedding.
Gail Baines is having a bad day. To start, she loses her job—or quits, depending on whom you ask. Tomorrow her daughter, Debbie, is getting married, and she hasn’t even been invited to the spa day organized by the mother of the groom. Then, Gail’s ex-husband, Max, arrives unannounced on her doorstep, carrying a cat, without a place to stay, and without even a suit.
But the true crisis lands when Debbie shares with her parents a secret she has just learned about her husband to be. It will not only throw the wedding into question but also stir up Gail and Max’s past.
Told with deep sensitivity and a tart sense of humor, full of the joys and heartbreaks of love and marriage and family life, Three Days in June is a triumph, and gives us the perennially bestselling, Pulitzer Prize–winning writer at the height of her powers.
My Thoughts:
As I journeyed with the characters in Three Days in June, I was drawn to them all. Gail and Max are ex-husband and wife drawn together for their daughter Debbie’s wedding. Max has shown up on Gail’s doorstep to stay over for the weekend.
We have an opportunity to see what their relationship looked like, in the past and in the present.
We also have a chance to glimpse what the newlyweds are facing and get to imagine what their relationship will look like.
As the wedding progresses, and as the characters move on past the ceremony and begin to develop their own unique issues, we are happy to take a leap into the future for all of them.
I was delighted with this story and happily assigned 5 stars.

5,0 van 5 sterren A small gem of a novel
Gail is deputy principal at a high school for rich kids. When the principal says she’ll be retiring, Gail assumes she’ll be the new principal. But no. That gig has been assigned to someone else, someone who’ll be bringing a new deputy with her. Gail walks out. It’s just before Debbie - Gail’s only child - is to be married. But there’s a hiccup re the groom that might mean all bets are off. Gail’s ex Max arrives unexpectedly. He’s brought with him an elderly cat that’s up for adoption and can’t stay at Debbie’s because her intended is allergic.
Thus the scene is set for this gentle exploration of ordinary lives. Nothing bad happens. The opposite, in fact, as Gail, who is somewhat set in her ways, buttons her lip regularly but also, in reflecting on the past, realises something important just as Max sets off for his own place after the wedding. It’s low key, charming, and very good at conveying the famed politeness of middle America. A small gem.

4,0 van 5 sterren Refreshing, engaging read.
"Three Days in June" by Anne Tyler is a heartfelt story of family dynamics, love, and second chances, all centered around the day before, the day of, and the day after Gail's daughter's wedding.
Gail is a bit of a mess, and she finds her life in disarray the day before her daughter's wedding. She is dealing with unexpected changes at work, and her ex-husband, Max, shows up on her doorstep unannounced looking for a place to stay, and of all things, he brings along a senior cat he picked up along the way to foster.
As Max's presence stirs up forgotten emotions and a family secret bubbles to the surface, Gail is forced to confront not only her past but also the uncertain direction of her future.
Overall, this book is a refreshing, engaging read that leaves you feeling uplifted. You'll laugh, you'll ponder, and you might just recognize a little bit of your own family in the mix. If you're in the mood for a lighthearted escape, you’ll definitely want to pick this one up!

4,0 van 5 sterren ANNE TYLER STYLE
I used to really love Tyler's work but lately they feel formulaic and this one though pleasant and wryly funny about relationships where we know someone very well.. I found it easy to read. But not much to report other than a mid late stage life romance rekindled
