The protagonists of Andris Kurprišs’s debut collection are at times melancholy and worrisome, and world-angry or absurdist at others. Kuprišs plays with tension, a building up to climaxes reminiscent of Henry James—but with endings that leave a lingering sense of having missed some important detail, some sinister clue that will reveal all meaning. Deceptively simple, nostalgic, and resigned, Kurprišs’s characters show how it can be just as hard to arrive somewhere (physical or intangible) as it can be to leave.

Andris Kuprišs is in 1982 geboren in Letland. Hij is schrijver en vertaler. Hij studeerde journalistiek aan de Universiteit van Letland en behaalde een MA in fotografie aan de Goldsmiths University of London. Berlin is zijn literaire debuut.

Michael Idov (9 July 1976, Riga Letland) is a novelist, director, and screenwriter. In fact it was dusted off in the 1990s precisely because of its description of how society behaves in untrammelled free markets. The poor and hardworking Sveilis family suddenly inherit great wealth, and this leads them on a journey in which desire and disappointment are always in control, and the author avoids many of the readers’ expectations and all stock narratives.

Upīts is forensic in his naturalistic analysis of a society contending with extremes of both wealth and poverty, and how this is undermining what is left of a moral society. High on a bull market and a flood of quality alcohol, the nouveau riche are in expansive mood but what they experience is not happiness but jaded insatiability ultimately stronger than they are. These hellraisers and presumed winners in the struggle for wealth are the subject of this highly original novel, and the losers are barely mentioned except in its brief first section. The pace and the detailed observation of psychological developments carries readers along through a narrative whose power resides in its lack of moralism. They are left to make their own judgements.

Even beeldend als precies beschrijft de Italiaanse auteur Marina Jarre het verhaal van haar bijzondere jeugd, die begint in Letland in de jaren 1920 en ’30. Zij wordt geboren in een gecompliceerd gezin: haar ongrijpbare, knappe vader – een Letse jood die in 1941 omkwam in de holocaust -, haar strenge moeder – een Italiaanse protestant die Russische literatuur vertaalde; haar zus, haar Letse grootouders. Jarre vertelt over haar kindertijd en puberteit, eerst als Duitstalige minderheid in Riga, en over daarna haar leven in Italië. Na de scheiding van haar ouders in 1935 wordt ze naar haar grootouders van moederskant gestuurd, Franstalige protestanten in de Alpenvalleien ten zuidwesten van Turijn, geen vanzelfsprekend thuis voor een jood in fascistische Italië.

Deze memoires zjn van het niveau van Geheugen, spreek van Vladimir Nabokov of Annie Ernaux’s De jaren. Ze gaan over tijd, taal, vrouwelijkheid, verbondenheid en vervreemding, en centraal staat de vraag wat een thuis betekent voor degenen die er geen hebben, of meer dan één.

Marina Jarre (1925-2016) werd geboren in de Letse hoofdstad Riga. Haar vader was een Letse jood, haar moeder een Italiaanse protestant. Na de scheiding van haar ouders in 1935 werd ze naar haar streng gelovige Franstalige grootouders van moederszijde gestuurd, die in een gehucht ten zuidwesten van Turijn woonden. Jarre schreef romans, korte verhalen en non-fictie. Verre vaders verscheen voor het eerst in Italië in 1987.
